Metro Bus Operators to compete in 37th Annual Local Bus Roadeo May 21, 2026

Dial-a-Ride buses navigate the cones to complete tight maneuvers at the 2025 Local Bus Roadeo.

On Thursday, May 21, 2026 Metro Bus Operators will have their skills tested under simulated driving and service conditions. The 37th Annual Local Bus Roadeo will be held on a closed course at the St. Cloud State University (SCSU) K-Lot next to the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. The action begins at 11 AM with the large (Fixed Route) bus division followed immediately by the small (Dial-a-Ride) buses.
Metro Bus CEO Ryan I. Daniel explains what makes the Local Bus Roadeo a great event, “Each year, the Roadeo gives us an opportunity to showcase the professionalism, precision and commitment of our Bus Operators. These individuals represent the very best of public transportation, demonstrating exceptional skill as they navigate a challenging course designed to test safety and performance.” Daniel continues, “I encourage our customers, community partners, and members of the public to join us for this free event and experience firsthand the talent and dedication that drive our system every day.”
During the Roadeo, Bus Operators navigate a timed obstacle course comprised of orange road cones, an acceleration requirement and other tests mimicking real-life driving scenarios. Metro Bus staff and volunteers score the competitors throughout the maneuvers including avoiding cones, minimizing stops and starts, maintaining optimal distance from obstacles and more.
The Roadeo and practice prior to the event provide Bus Operators with an opportunity to hone their real-world driving skills, as well as an occasion to gather with co-workers. Contestants, Metro Bus staff and volunteers use the time between runs to share highlights of past Roadeos and catch up with each other. This year Metro Bus is partnering with North Central Bus and Equipment to create an enjoyable event for the competitors and volunteers.

Top finishers in each division qualify to compete in the Minnesota Statewide Bus Roadeo to be held July 17-18 in Carver, MN, hosted by Southwest Transit. Top finishers at the state level are also eligible to advance to their respective national competition.

The skills that make Bus Operators successful on the Roadeo course are the same ones they use to deliver safe, reliable, friendly public transportation services. If you are able, please join the festivities at the SCSU K-Lot on May 21 to cheer on these great professionals!
