The Metro Bus Long Range Transportation plan is a 20-year planning horizon, which provides a list of transportation projects to meet future needs in the Central Minnesota area.
In March 2016 Metro Bus’s Board of Commissioners approved the Metro Bus Long Range Transit Plan. It recommended route and service improvements. The goals of this plan are to:
Improve reliability and on-time performance of routes
Respond to the community’s needs by expanding service to unserved and underserved areas
Improve access to transit services
The Long Range Transit Plan Update includes proposed route realignments, operating and capital cost estimates, as well as various other planning elements.

Safety is a core value at Metro Bus. The purpose of the Public Transit Agency Safety Plan (PTASP) is to provide guidance that enables Metro Bus to properly identify and address safety concerns or hazardous conditions effectively.

The Surface Transportation Assistance Act of 1982 as amended, created the Section 5307 formula program and Sections 5308, 5309, 5316 and 5317 discretionary programs to make Federal resources available to urbanized areas for capital, operating, and planning assistance purposes.
