Metro Bus drivers to showcase skills in friendly competition

ST. CLOUD (5/15/17) — More than a dozen Metro Bus drivers will be competing for local top honors at the Metro Bus Roadeo scheduled 1-4 pm Thursday, May 18 at St. Cloud State University’s K-Lot. The competition is open for the public to watch.

“This is your chance to see what it takes to be a bus operator,” said Ryan Daniel, Chief Executive Officer for Metro Bus. “Each obstacle simulates a real-life driving scenario. Observe our competition and you will gain a greater appreciation for this profession.”

The Bus Roadeo is a chance for drivers in both Fixed Route and Dial-a-Ride divisions to showcase their driving skills. Drivers are scored on navigating through a timed obstacle course of orange road cones, testing various real life driving scenarios. Metro Bus has held local Bus Roadeo competitions since 1986. This year 10 Fixed Route Drivers and eight Dial-a-Ride Drivers are scheduled to compete on Thursday.

The top two finishers from each division qualify to compete in the Minnesota Statewide Bus Roadeo to be held July 14-15, in Fergus Falls. If they win first place at the state level they are eligible to compete in their respective national competitions.

Last July, two Metro Bus Dial-a-Ride drivers placed high at the state competition in the small bus division: Todd DeZurik earned first and David Peacock earned second. Next month DeZurik will be competing at the national competition for small buses hosted by the Community Transportation Association of America in Detroit, Mich.
